I am a Boxer. Writer Stephanie Abraham wrote the following words for me:
“He will make you laugh; he will make you cry; he will try your patience; he will outwit you when he can.  And he will love you with intensity that will surprise and amaze you.  He will be your canine soul mate.”  -From her book “The Boxer: Family Favorite

We were first bred in Germany around 100 years ago. Yes, that makes us a contemporary of the German Shepherd. Our ancestor was the  German Bullenbeisser, which is now, sadly, extinct. Boxers and Bulldogs worked as Guard Dogs during the World War I.

Despite our somewhat forbidding looks, we are rather cute. We are high-energy dogs and the pup within us continues to frolic throughout our lives. Some of us are boisterous, but we all love our human families and we are considered very gentle with children. This of course doesn’t mean that children should be taking us for walks, because our large size makes us slightly difficult to be handled by the very young and the very old.

Boxers aren’t aggressive and yet we make fantastic guard dogs because our loyalty makes us guard our homes zealously. Even among dogs we are rather high on loyalty.

We have a rather unique physiognomy. We have this typical dome-shaped head and the lower jaw extends slightly beyond the upper – you can call it an underbite. Our nose is curved upwards and We have thick and droopy lips. All in all, we look exotic and different.

The Boxer’s Physical Attributes:

Here are a few physical characteristics that’ll give you an idea of  our arresting looks:

  • Height: 22-25 in
  • Weight: 55-75 lb
  • Coat: Colors vary from dark red to fawn and brindled with white markings. We have a coat of shiny, short hair that’s easy to maintain.
  • Life Span:  10-12 years
